LATEST UPDATE (August 22, 2012): Carbon Copy Cloner is no longer free software. As an alternative, you can use SuperDuper, which is also free (but with a more fully-featured paid version). It's free and reliable (there is a small ad in the cloning process window, which you can minimize). I personally recommend Carbon Copy Cloner. OS X has all sorts of important, hidden boot files that you won't be able to copy normally, so you'll have to use special cloning software. To learn how to clone your hard drive (and likely save your a lot of trouble in the future), jump past the break. I personally recommend cloning your hard drive when updating to Lion, for instance. This is incredibly useful for Hackintoshes if your original OS X installation explodes while upgrading, you'll still be able to boot from your clone, and you won't end up having to reinstall your entire operating system. Cloning is making an exact, bootable copy of your main hard drive, onto a separate hard drive or hard drive partition. ![]()
